EcoSeed: Does the Renewable Fuel Standard Spell The End of Classic Vehicles?
July 31 - Are classic muscle cars and vintage motorcycles suffering from a debilitating diet? As the amount of biofuel blended with U.S gasoline supplies increases, many vintage vehicles could be feeling the long-term effects. Modern gasoline blends are far different than those used in the era of classic cars and motorcycles. Do higher biofuel blending percentages, such as the widespread but practically unknown “E15,” spell the end of antique autos and motorcycles?
The Renewable Fuel Standard and “E15”
If you've never heard of E15, you are not alone. In fact, most people are completely unaware of the billions of gallons of ethanol-blended fuel quickly becoming a part of the American fuel infrastructure. In a testimony before the U.S House Committee on Energy and Commerce, American Automobile Association President Robert L. Darbellnet quoted a survey conducted by AAA, which found 95 percent of consumers have never heard of the fuel known as “E15,” a blend of 85 percent gasoline and 15 percent ethanol. In addition, Darbellnet called for increased consumer awareness concerning E15 and its potential effects on automobiles. Despite this, few people know anything about E15 or where it came from.
